I love Houston, but I have to admit, growing up in Austin, I was told that Houston was too BIG. We had been married ten years when my husband relocated here in 1990, and I had to eat my words that I would “never move to Houston!” But we had to eat.

That was then, and this is now. With people from all over the world here, we have a richness in culture seen nowhere else. And it shows in how people treat each other here. I am so glad I raised my kids in Houston.

We Buy Houses All Over Houston

Houston is the fourth-largest city in America — and with all of Harris County counted in, we’re closer to the fifth-largest metro in the country. I’m not going to pretend I know every corner of a city this size, because I don’t, and you’d see through it if I tried.

What I do know well is West and Southwest Houston. My office sits right on the Southwest Freeway at Fondren, and that’s the part of the city I drive through day in and day out: Sharpstown, Gulfton, Westbury, Meyerland, Fondren Southwest, Westchase, Alief, Braeburn, and Glenshire. If your house is in one of these areas, I’m not learning your neighborhood from a map — I already know much of it.

And if you’re outside that stretch, don’t worry — I still buy houses across the greater Houston area. I just won’t pretend to have the same feel for a part of town I don’t drive through every week.

What’s Actually Happening in the Houston Market

I’m a Realtor as much as I’m a buyer, so let me put my “CFO hat” on for a minute and just give you the numbers plainly.

Houston’s median home sale price has moved from roughly $217,000 ten years ago to around $345,000 today — real growth, but not the runaway spike some markets have seen, which has kept the city relatively accessible compared to other major metros.

My husband tells me house prices are more stable in Houston because they let builders build here. I believe it.

The population tells a similar story: As of mid-2025, the metro sits just above 7.9 million. There were 3.86 million people when I moved here in 1990.

On industry: Houston’s economy has diversified more than people realize. Energy is still big, but healthcare (the Texas Medical Center is the largest medical complex in the world), the Port of Houston, and a growing tech and aerospace presence have made our local economy less dependent on oil prices than it was a generation ago. That diversification tends to mean a steadier housing market — fewer of the sharp swings tied to a single industry.

None of this tells you what your house is worth or what you should do. But it’s worth knowing the environment you’re actually selling into, not just guessing at it. And things can change quickly. Don’t make a stranger out of yourself, and I’ll keep you up on things!
